King Kohli puts India in command in test

-

Virat Kohli scored 235 before India were all out for 631, a lead of 231 on day four of the fourth cricket test against England in Mumbai yesterday.

India’s No 9 batsman Jayant Yadav hit his maiden century with 104.

Kohli and Yadav scored 215 runs for the eighth wicket, an all-time Indian record for this wicket in test cricket. The pair topped the 161 runs scored by Mohammad Azharduddin and Anil Kumble against South Africa in 1996.

England, who scored 400 in their first innings, looked listless in the field at the start of the day. The visitors’ bowling was devoid of any energy or intention, allowing Kohli and Yadav to score 78 runs in 16 overs in the first hour of play.

Yadav reached his second test halfcentury off 103 balls, including seven fours.

Kohli then made his remarkable double century off 302 balls, batting 23 fours. He reached the third double century of his career - all coming this year - and became the second Indian captain to score a double century against England, after MAK Pataudi did it at Delhi in 1963-64.

With 617 runs scored so far in this series, Kohli has also surpassed Rahul Dravid’s record of 602 runs for an Indian batsman in a test series against England, set in 2002.

Keaton Jennings, who scored a century in England’s first innings, was out for a duck just after the start of their second innings.
