Karapoti 2017

Based in the rugged Akatarawa Ranges, this is the who’s who of mountain bike races and the longest-running such event in the country. This old-school adventure ride features a 50km classic to the 20km challenge and the children’s 5k race. When: From 10am today, first runner home expected about noon. Where: Karapoti Park, Upper Hutt. Cost: $30-$100. Weather: 24C with a light wind. Occasional rain could turn heavy.

Art Deco Festival

For five days every year, Napier is transporte­d back to the 1920s and 1930s. Highlights include the today’s street party, with vintage car parades, flight displays, music and dancing in the streets as 40,000 visitors fill the Hawke’s Bay region. Tomorrow’s highlights include the Soap Box Derby from 10.30am with children and parents racing carts down Napier’s Tennyson St. It is followed by the Gatsby Picnic along Marine Parade from 1pm with visitors bringing fine china for a picnic. When: Today, vintage car parade 12.30pm. Where: Parade at Clive Square. Other events held across Hawke’s Bay region. Entry: Free entry to parade. Weather: Today overcast with evening showers and a high of 24C. Tomorrow cloud with some showers and a high of 24C.

Kapiti Coast’s Express Day

The region’s first close-up look at the $630 million project before the cars start running. Kapiti Coast’s Express Day will let people explore a 5km section of the new four-lane road between Paraparaum­u and Waikanae, north of Wellington. The day will include bus tours, entertainm­ent, food trucks, and expert speakers. The Kapiti Expressway will open to traffic before the end of the month. When: Today 10am-3pm. If the weather is wet, organisers will postpone until tomorrow. Check nzta.govt.nz for updates. Where: Access via Te Roto Drive, Paraparaum­u, and Te Moana Rd, Waikanae. Entry: Free Weather: Occasional showers, possibly heavy, with light winds and a high of 24C.

Round the Bays

This year’s event – Wellington’s 40th – will see 14,000 Wellington­ians running, walking, dancing and skipping Round the Bays from Frank Kitts to Kilbirnie park. After selling out, organisers ordered 500 new bibs, and 50 per cent of proceeds raised from these entries will go to the Christchur­ch Disaster Relief Fund. When: Tomorrow from 7.45am. Where: Frank Kitts Park. Cost: $32 for a 6.5km fun run or walk. Weather: High of 24C with a light breeze and occasional rain.
