It doesn’t pay to default on student loan debts

A marked increase in student loan defaulters now paying back their loans – 32 per cent since December 2014 – has been welcomed by Revenue Minister Judith

Collins and Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment Minister Paul Goldsmith. In that period, there was a 66 per cent rise in the number of overseas borrowers who were behind on their payments getting in touch with IRD. Repayments by those who defaulted increased by $24.5 million for the year to December 2016.
