Petone bundle City out of Chatham Cup

A stunning second half saw Petone upset their better-performed rivals Lower Hutt City in the big Wellington region result of football’s Chatham Cup first round on Saturday.

The Capital Premier leaders, with six wins from their first seven matches, scored three unanswered goals against their Central League opponents to progress to the last 64 with a 3-1 victory at Petone Memorial.

The result meant Lower Hutt became the first of the six Wellington Central League sides to crash out.

The visitors led 1-0 at halftime in a tense derby with few clearcut chances. It all opened up after the break when Ben Feld equalised and Petone roared into life, creating numerous chances.

The scores remained level till the final 10 minutes when Hayden Stuthridge poked home from a goalmouth scramble, then Zach Watson completed Petone’s victory in the 88th minute from a rebound.

Stokes Valley also eyed a boilover before Tawa closed out a 4-3 win at Delaney Park.

Jake Philp equalised for Stokes Valley in the 67th minute and home supporters dared to dream, before Tawa’s Mike Ramaekers completed his hat-trick in the 89th minute after he’d scored from a penalty just before halftime.

Island Bay United progressed in a thriller against Waterside Karori, the match decided by an own goal in extra time.

Scores were locked 2-2 at fulltime after Karori’s Facundo Barbero scored his second in the 65th minute.

The teams got within seven minutes of a penalty shootout before Karori found their own net and Island Bay were celebratin­g.

Second-placed Central League side Stop Out had to work for their 2-1 win over Victoria University, with James Sharp sending them through to the next round in stoppage time.

Western Suburbs were untroubled by their trip to Wainuiomat­a, with hat-tricks to Ihaia Delaney and Owen ParkerPric­e securing a 7-0 victory.
