Armed robbery
Gun held to Scott Dixon's head
Kiwi motorsport ace Scott Dixon didn’t take the armed robbers seriously at first when they help him up at a Taco Bell in Indianapolis, his mother says.
Dixon and former IndyCar driver Dario Franchitti were robbed at 9.40pm (2.40pm Monday NZ time) at the fast-food restaurant near the Indianapolis Motor Speedway after he had won pole position for the Indy 500.
‘‘Scott didn’t take it seriously to start with when the gunman held a gun to his head,’’ Glenys Dixon told NZME.
‘‘They had got Emma’s wallet and then they were asking for Scott and Dario’s mobile phones. Scott said they didn’t have their phones and then a car came up behind and the [robbers] ran off.’’
Two teenagers, ages 15 and 14, were arrested, according to the police report. Both were charged with robbery, while the 15-year-old was also charged with resisting law enforcement.
Glenys Dixon said her son’s wife, Emma Davies-Dixon, was not with the pair as initially reported, but her handbag was in the car and was taken by the robbers.
Speaking the day after the holdup, Davies-Dixon, said she did not want to say much about the incident, preferring to focus on her husband’s success at the track, where he had won pole.
‘‘I’m not really allowed to talk about it,’’ she said.
Dixon has not talked about the crime.
‘‘Scott Dixon and Dario Franchitti are completely fine after being held up last night by two men at a fast-food restaurant,’’ Chip Ganassi Racing said.
‘‘We will allow the Speedway/ Indianapolis police departments to handle the situation and while they conduct their investigation we will refrain from making any further comments to allow Scott to focus on the upcoming Indianapolis 500.’’
Dixon will start on the pole for the third time. He won the Indy 500 from the pole in 2008.
