That tackle, that game . . .

-

Re the red card issued to Sonny Bill Williams on Saturday night, why was that given?

Let’s talk practicality here. This is not a Buckingham Palace tea party. You have 30 big guys going at each other for 80 minutes. You’re talking a high-stakes test and some desperation. Simple as that.

Sonny Bill is a physical colossus. He’s not malicious in any way, shape or form, and neither are the All Blacks. Sonny Bill collided with a smaller player front on – no damage done. He didn’t take the player out off the ball, he didn’t pick him up and drop him on his head and he didn’t knock him out.

Players are going to bang into one another and a guy of his size can only do so much about it, so what would you have him do?

A warning and a penalty would have sufficed; game continues.

I do congratulate the All Blacks for their handling of a highly unreasonable situation in awful conditions and I wish Sonny Bill well.

Andrew Shirtcliffe, Auckland Three men in a rugby game attack the heads of an opposing player. One gets a red card and a month’s suspension, the others get off scotfree.

When will rugby be consistent with its concerns over concussion. And when will judicial panels stop punishing some players and finding invalid excuses for others.

Arthur Andrews, Petone After their great win the Lions are now going to Queenstown. In its 2012 tour Ireland only lost the second test 19-22, after an 81st minute drop goal from Dan Carter. Then Ireland went to Queenstown and nothing more was heard of them until the next weekend, when they were beaten 60-0.

Teams go to Queenstown to party, and certainly not to train. I expect the Lions to turn up at Eden Park somewhat bleary eyed and the worse for wear.

You won’t catch the All Blacks going to Queenstown before an important test.

John Whitty, Aro Valley Maybe Sonny Bill intentionally got himself an early shower because he was embarrassed about playing at Westpac Stadium?
