Iwi designs to feature in hotel revamp
Maori wood carvings gifted by local iwi will be included in the design of a Holiday Inn Auckland Airport refurbishment.
The hotel is about to embark on a $3 million revamp of the restaurant and bar, function rooms, hotel lobby, reception and swimming pool.
General manager Scott Schaefer said the move would revolutionise guest and visitor experiences by making the spaces more contemporary and tranquil.
The work is scheduled for completion in January 2018.
Building on the heritage, community and cultural significance of the hotels location, creative design agency Designworks has been charged with drawing inspiration from New Zealand and Pacific culture.
The Vapor Restaurant will feature more colour, with the aim of making it more relaxed and friendly, while the entrance port will receive new lighting, greenery and exterior panels.
Halo Bar’s structural refurbishment will include the removal of existing floor and ceiling features, and transforming the ground-floor space.
This will open up the bar to the new swimming pool deck where guests can enjoy drinks and food.
There will be new furniture, flooring, light fixtures and artwork throughout.
The Holiday Inn is located minutes from Auckland Airport and motorways.
Schaefer said the refurbishment aimed to create an everyday escape for Aucklanders on business, and a home-awayfrom-home for travellers.
‘‘A mix of eclectic furniture including chunky timber communal tables and upholstered soft-seating furniture will be complemented by geometric timber cladding, purposely mismatched lighting and bold graphics for interior walls.’’
The work is being carried out by Designworks, JSC, and construction company Format.
Schaefer said the investment by building owner Cockpit International demonstrated its commitment to Auckland and New Zealand tourism. –Fairfax NZ
