The candidates
Ron Mark, NZ First: Member of Parliament and deputy leader of NZ First
Wairarapa is a large electorate stretching from Waipawa to Ngawi; each of these communities have their own issues. One major neglected issue is the Manawatu Gorge but the road is not in Auckland so it has received little attention. A second major issue is housing. We have the solution: build more houses, stop selling Housing New Zealand stock and cut immigration.
Roger Greenslade, ACT Party: Secondary school teacher
This election I am asking voters to give their party vote to ACT. Gaining as little as 3.5 per cent of the party vote will give ACT five MPs. ACT is the only party that truly promotes personal responsibility, smaller government and the protection of property rights. Communities like those in the Wairarapa need ACT in Parliament to ensure a coalition of taxation on the Left doesn’t destroy the rural economy.
Kieran McAnulty, Labour Party: Economic development manager at Masterton District Council
Wairarapa has been taken for granted for too long. We have a chance to elect an MP who is visible, engaged and holds an absolute commitment to this electorate. I want to give Wairarapa its voice back. I want to see the opportunities for our young return. In future, when people look at this region, I want them to see an area that is thriving – for all.
Alastair Scott, National Party: MP for Wairarapa
As a primary producer and exporter, I am an advocate for the rural sector and a supporter of small businesses. I am keen to see Wairarapa flourish, thanks to improved access to education, health services and improved transportation between here and Wellington. National is delivering for hardworking Kiwis. We are investing in infrastructure, better public services and we’re backing families.
John Hart, Green Party: Sheep and beef farmer
Farming, as usual, faces some urgent challenges but our response to climate change and the drive towards a zero-carbon economy also present some incredible opportunities for our producers. I’m committed to the future of our region – I live here and have a young family. I’m in an electable position at No 12 on the Greens list, so I’m asking for your party vote so the region gains another MP who cares.
