Two in custody after man shot
A man and a woman have been apprehended after a shooting in Dannevirke.
Police were called to a Dannevirke property on Hunter St about 11am yesterday where a man had been shot in the shoulder.
He was taken to Palmerston North Hospital where he was in a stable condition.
Police said they knew those involved and their hunt for the shooter led them to Woodville, where a handcuffed man was seen being escorted from a Richardson St house about 1.30pm.
A police spokesperson said a woman was also apprehended.
Details about the relationship between the victim and the offenders, or what led to the incident, were not available, the spokesperson said.
Members of the armed offenders squad and armed police officers surrounded the Richardson St property about 12.30pm. Cordons were also erected in the area.
Police were heard calling for a person inside the house to come out with their hands up. ‘‘It is the armed offenders squad. You are now surrounded by armed police. We are here to talk to you,’’ was repeated over a loudhailer.
Police led a handcuffed man from the house into waiting police cars about 1.30pm.
A Fergusson St resident, who did not wish to be named, said she tried to go home for lunch, but was turned away by police.
Her home was across the street from the house police had surrounded, and her family had been told not to go outside.
A large group of residents from nearby houses watched the arrest unfold. Many of them described the arrested man as someone who seemed to keep out of trouble, and was known as a bit of a petrolhead.
He had mostly kept busy doing home renovations, they said.
They called out to him by a nickname as he was arrested, but he did not respond.
Friends of the arrested man, who live on a nearby street, declined to comment.
