NZ version lacking

-

Kiwis can only order the basic version of the Fire TV Stick from Amazon’s website so we miss out on voice control using its digital assistant Alexa and 4K video.

This is a shame, as pairing a streaming device to Alexa would add a lot of value.

Also, 4K should be standard these days.

Alternatives

The two alternatives available to buy in New Zealand are the Apple TV and Google’s Chromecast.

The basic version of Apple TV ($249) has a good remote and streams a lot better than the Fire TV Stick and the Chromecast devices.

However, to get 4K you need to buy the newer version which costs $299.

Apple TV also has Lightbox and ThreeNow streaming apps along with Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

Chromecast Ultra ($109) has 4K but you need to use your phone as a remote, which some people may find annoying. However, it does have Lightbox, Neon and ThreeNow.

Verdict

The Fire TV Stick is only suitable for people with a high-definition TV who want to watch Netflix. It’s also got a good remote and is easy to use.

If you have a 4K television or are thinking about getting one, then look elsewhere.

It’s a shame that Amazon is only selling its basic version to New Zealanders. Its latest model with 4K and Alexa would be much better and allow Kiwis to get a future-proofed device.

That means the Fire TV Stick is a compromise, especially since it’s missing the Kiwi streaming apps.
