Pugs aplenty for fun, furry fundraiser

- RUBY MACANDREW

Fancy a cuddle with a pug – or 60 – this weekend? You’re in luck with the now-annual Hug-A-Pug back for another year.

The cuddle-fest is the brainchild of the Wellington Pug Grumble, a group of more than 300 pug owners, who started the event last year as a way of raising muchneeded funds for New Zealand Pug Rescue.

‘‘It’s a cause extremely close to many pug owners’ hearts. They take in pugs of any age, from any source, including those with health issues and provide care and medical attention where required,’’ event organiser Vanessa Reeder says.

The organisation assists often old and infirm pugs and gives them a second chance at leading a fulfilled life. They are lovingly cared for, given medical attention and re-homed where possible – all on a shoestring budget.

‘‘Most are able to be placed into pre-approved new, loving homes. Those that are unable to be placed because of age or health problems get to live out their days with them,’’ Reeder says.

‘‘Any donations go a long way towards ensuring they receive the care they need and deserve.’’

The inaugural event raised more than $3500, with an estimated 1500 people squeezing into The Rogue and Vagabond bar. While Reeder says the day was a huge success, she knew they would need a bigger venue this time around.

‘‘We have a fantastic new donated space, The Oasis [at Odlins Plaza], which is able to be fenced off with specified entry points, making it much easier to contain everyone in one space.’’

At last count, close to 60 pugs have been confirmed for the weekend event.

‘‘It’s shaping up to be a great afternoon – our pugs love attention, they love people and they love hugs so we’re looking forward to letting the public experience what we love so much about our breed,’’ Reeder says.

In addition to all the pug cuddling, there will also be a raffle, baking table and an outdoor bar; making for a fun afternoon out.

❚ The gold-coin event is set down for tomorrow from 2pm but, in case of rain, the back-up day is Sunday, March 25.
