Search on for ‘face’ of skincare brand

- RUBY MACANDREW

Wellington-based skincare company Tailor is on the hunt for a fresh face to represent the growing brand and its principles. It has launched a New Zealand and Australia-wide model search.

The Face of Beauty Search, created by Tailor founder Sara Quilter, is part of a wider campaign aimed at flipping traditional beauty standards on their head.

‘‘I was just sick of seeing these super airbrushed ads for skincare products, made to appeal to older markets but using 20-year-old models. It doesn’t make any sense,’’ Quilter says.

The idea for the model search grew out of that frustration, with Quilter keen to find someone authentic to represent the brand she has dedicated the past six years of her life to.

‘‘I want to find someone who embodies my principles of what beauty is – a person who is really firm on who they are as a person and loves themselves.

‘‘I’m looking for someone who really has that X-factor personality, so they need to be influential and have a community behind them but I want the people who are engaged with them to be following them not because they’re posting nude selfies but because they are authentic, interesting and are doing cool stuff in the world.’’

While Quilter is well aware that Tailor is a skincare company that needs to sell products, she doesn’t want to be part of an industry that weaponises people’s anxieties against them.

‘‘At the end of the day, we’re not trying to sell hope in a bottle or prey on your insecurities. We just want to provide great products that you can be confident using.

‘‘If skincare can help to build someone’s self-confidence by helping clear their skin or brightening their complexion then that’s great. That’s the reason why I love continuing in this business.’’

The winner of the month-long model search will be announced on May 1. They will be flown to Wellington for an all-expensespaid weekend exploring all of Quilter’s favourite places in the capital while shooting content for the brand.

‘‘I want to show off the places and companies that I love, so they’ll have access to a Mevo car, stay at QT [Museum Hotel], join me for a float session at Float Well and yoga at Power Living.

‘‘It’s all brands that fit with that holistic approach to health and wellbeing that Tailor is all about.’’

Once the right person has been chosen, Quilter will begin looking at what role they might have within the company, beyond the jam-packed prize weekend.

‘‘I’m about the long game with Tailor so it’s about what they want to do with their life and from there we’ll see what could happen in terms of future collaboration.

‘‘It could be the start of something really frickin’ awesome, not only for us at Tailor but for this person.’’
