Feel like dancing

’Tis the season for cutting a rug, so make sure you’re dressed for it.

- Karlya Smith

Now that the celebratory season is upon us, I’ll take any chance I can to hit the dance floor.

I’m a compulsive dancer, but too many times, I’ve had to resort to swaying on the spot and shimmying my shoulders because my shoes are too high to really cut loose.

At the office Christmas party, a leotard and leg-warmers would be memorable in all the wrong ways, but there is still plenty you can do to make your outfit dance-fit.

The first thing to think about is underwear. A supportive, comfortable bra and knickers that don’t ride up are a must.

When it comes to outerwear, choose something comfortable, breathable, and easy to move in. To elevate your experience, I’d suggest taking a cue from the professional dance world by choosing a skirt or dress that swishes dramatically as you move, or a piece with a kinetic trim, like fringing, paillettes or ruffles, which can take the joy of dancing to a new level.

Accessory-wise, sneakers or flats are ideal. Chunky-heeled low to mid-height pumps work well, as do styles with a bit of a platform, as long as they’re flexible. Cross-body handbags, or the currently fashionable bum bag will leave your spirit fingers free to do their thing. 1. Camilla & Marc Villiers midi dress, $840 2. Yu Mei Rebecca bag, $449
