Christmas gifts for the home lover

If you’re stuck for present-buying inspiration, Katie Newton has some chic suggestions.

For the colourful creative

You’re not going to get away with giving a pair of socks or a box of chocolates here. This giftee is probably a master present buyer themselves, so requires something thoughtful with off-kilter appeal.

For small budgets, Meg McMillan from Tea Pea would choose a large, durable beach bag in a quirky print, or for larger ones, a bean bag in animal print velvet to make

‘‘a confident punch’’ in a living space.

‘‘And there’s no such thing as too many cushions,’’ she adds. ‘‘Society of Wanderers have a new luxe 50s-inspired collection made from flax linen that’s gorgeous on a sofa or a bed.’’ The sweet, granny-chic Joan’s floral is her favourite print.

For the low-key homebody

Well versed in JOMO (the joy of missing out), this person loves nothing more than hiding from the world in a cosy nook with a cuppa and a good read. Take your cue from their favourite non-activities and consider new PJs, a magazine subscription or one of those delicious herbal teas that look like potpourri.

Katie Collis from Thread Design also suggests new bed linen or some Japaneseinspired Kinto stacking mugs, ideal for anyone with limited cupboard space. ‘‘They’re the perfect size and will soon become a favourite for a morning coffee or cup of tea in bed,’’ she says. Otherwise, she’s a fan of a beautiful puzzle. ‘‘Not only do they exercise your mind, they are beautiful to look at.’’

For the understated nature lover

Plastic, disposable or garish won’t do for this person. Their gift needs to be tasteful, useful and made to last. Think ceramics in earthy tones, good-quality kitchenware, or even a bunch of flowers or herbs freshly foraged from your garden.

Gem Adams from Blackbird Goods epitomises this style and suggests a woven basket for adventures or picnics or a soft face brush for some all-natural self care.

‘‘I don’t plan on doing much this summer, but I plan to be doing ‘not much’ in a linen kimono,’’ she says. ‘‘It’s effortless and simple for all-day wear.’’

For the outdoor entertainer

This person loves nothing more than hosting at theirs, with the doors flung open and plenty of delicious food and drink flowing. How do they make it look so effortless? With the right equipment, of course.

Myelz Moss, Freedom’s hard furniture buyer suggests gifting this person something that adds to this sense of ease – a lush, but fake, potted monstera plant (‘‘it sets the scene without the admin of watering’’) or a set of melamine tableware in a fun print.

‘‘The Vasaio setting is the ultimate hack for serving beautiful, summer-soiree dishes – and the plates do all the talking for you!’’ he says. ‘‘They make for an easy scrub-up following large gatherings, ensuring not one plate gets chipped.’’
