15 mins of fame

-

This summer, the Dominion Post hit the streets to ask people a series of random questions for our 15 Minutes of Fame project: anything from your favourite place for coffee, to what do you think of Donald Trump? Today we spoke to Lynette Juno ,a freedom camper with a home base in Masterton. She is currently having a gap year, or three, travelling the country in a mobile home.

Who would you invite – dead or alive – for a private dinner? And why?

I’d invite Lady Di because I would like to know what she got up to after her divorce.

What’s your favourite fun fact to tell people?

My latest fun fact I tell people is that no-one was ever buried on the Denniston Plateau on the West Coast because the rock was too hard to dig. They had to take the bodies down from the plateau in buckets.

Who was your best teacher and why?

Kahutara School’s head teacher in the 1960s, Mr (Derek) Ingram. He was enthused with life. He used to say ‘‘do as I say, not as I do’’ and he would come to class in barefeet and sit on his desk in Bermuda shorts and talk to the class.

What’s your favourite shop and why?

The supermarket. Because I am a freedom camper, I don’t have anywhere to put anything that I might buy from any other shop.

What issue do people need to talk about more?

All the money waste on soft government programmes that haven’t helped anybody. How are they really changing outcomes in lower socio-economic communities.

What trait do you most abhor in others?

A lack of common sense.

In five years’ time, will you be driving a petrol or electric vehicle, and why?

I hope I will be fit enough to be driving my diesel and still experiencing the wonders of New Zealand.

The All Blacks – pride of New Zealand or overpaid demigods?

The pride of New Zealand and best was Zinzan Brooke. He was good at his job and he was good looking.

What did you want to be when you grew up? What are you now?

I wanted to be either a scientist at the South Pole or a zookeeper. Now I’m in my gap year, being a tourist in my own country.

What is your very first memory?

My sister and I climbed up to get chocolate out of the cupboard but it was a laxative.

What is the most beautiful part of New Zealand in summer and why?

The southeastern coast of Wairarapa. The Cape Palliser Lighthouse gives the best views of the coast and the Lake Ferry Pub has the best views from a pub.
