Apartments for Thorndon

- Julie Iles

An 11-unit residential apartment block is coming to the corner of Wellington’s Tinakori Rd and Park St.

Plans on the recently approved resource consent documents include its design of two parallel buildings of interconnected threestorey villas, each with their own balcony and front lawn.

The ground floor is mostly garage space with a bedroom. The second floor includes an open plan living and dining room, with a kitchen and balcony. The third floor contains two more bedrooms.

The new development was designed by Solari architects.

The property, formerly an autobody shop at 92 Tinakori Road is owned by Camanda Garvie Properties.

Sole director Cameron Garvie said demolition would begin midJanuary on the site.

The design reflected the ‘‘precedent or style of house’’ found in Thorndon.

All but two of the new apartments have already been purchased in off-the-plan sales, Garvie said.

Each property will have its own title, rather than the building operating as a body corporate.

‘‘We figured out pretty early that it was important we get all the houses onto their own title. A lot of the purchasers are people coming out of apartments that have had bad experiences with body corporates or are downsizing from larger homes and wanted to stay in the area.’’

Construction will begin later in the year after a soil contamination report is done, due to the fact the space used to be a petrol station and then autobody shop.

Garvie said another one of his companies, Cam’s Carpentry will be in charge of the construction contract.

His company is finishing a similar build, a 12-unit development, in Owhiro Bay.

In resource consent documents, two neighbours submitted that they agreed with the plans.
