Crane re-rails commuter train
A train which derailed at Masterton has been repositioned back onto the tracks, with trains being cleared to run to the Wairarapa town again last night.
Buses had been transporting passengers between Masterton and
Solway stations since Sunday’s derailment, which took place as the train was travelling between the Renall St and Masterton stations. No passengers were onboard at the time.
A crane was used to re-rail the locomotive and carriages yesterday. Tthe track was then assessed for damage and the crane moved off-site before train services resumed.
‘‘The derailment may have damaged the track, so a full inspection must be completed. In the meantime, train services will continue to be bus replaced between Renall St and Masterton stations,’’ Metlink said earlier.
Numerous services were affected by the derailment including yesterday’s 5.46am, 6.20am, 6.47am and 10.30am services, which saw passengers bussed between Solway and Masterton. Those travelling from Solway to Wellington were able to board trains as usual.
Metlink spokeswoman Emily Liddell said it was not yet known what caused the derailment and an investigation was under way.
Transport Accident Investigation Commission spokesman Simon Pleasants said yesterday the commissioner was aware of the incident and was awaiting further information.
