Wolves kept at bay
Gabriel Jesus,
left with manager Pep Guardiola, kept up his impressive scoring streak for Manchester City with two goals in a 3-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers in the English Premier League, moving the champions back to within four points of Liverpool. The Brazil striker has seven goals across three competitions in the past nine days for City. His opening goal against Wolves was a 10th-minute tap-in following a left-wing cross from Leroy Sane. When Wolves defender Willy Boly was sent off in the 19th minute for a dangerous tackle on Bernardo Silva, it quickly became a damage-limitation exercise for the visitors. Jesus added his second goal from the penalty spot in the 39th. City piled on the pressure in the second half but had only one more goal to show for it, with Conor Coady glancing a header into his own net from substitute Kevin De Bruyne’s cross. Nine-time Coast to Coast winner Steve Gurney is stepping out of retirement to compete in this weekend’s Red Bull Defiance adventure race in Wanaka. The 55-year-old will lead his own team in the two-day 147km event that takes place on Saturday and Sunday. ‘‘This is going to be one heck of a race and very interesting from my perspective because I don’t expect my team to necessarily be the fastest, and for me it’s about working together, making the most of our strengths that should negate any weaknesses and enjoying the camaraderie,’’ Gurney said. The weekend of adventure is an ambitious punt for the Gurney team, who only came together after David Gray, Katie Smith and Carl Jones won the opportunity to race alongside the multisport legend. ‘‘I actually don’t know my team from a bar of soap, so it’s going to be lots of fun getting to know each other,‘‘ Gurney said. Former All Blacks captain Richie McCaw is also competing. The Royal New Zealand Coastguard is set to benefit from the lottery fund for community benefit related to the 2021 America’s Cup to the tune of $9.8m. The fund will see a fleet of 26 boats – 24 Rayglass ribs and two Salthouse powerboats – being built for the on-water operations running the Cup in Auckland. After the Cup match is completed in March 2021 the fleet will be distributed to coastguard units throughout the country to help the safety of boaties around New Zealand’s vast coastline. The Royal New Zealand Coastguard is staffed by volunteers stationed at 63 units around the country with 82 vessels in its current fleet.
