Phoenix dominate team of the week

-

Four Wellington Phoenix players have earned A-League Team of the Week honours following their impressive win over Melbourne City.

Goalkeeper Filip Kurto, defenders Andrew Durante and Liberato Cacace, and midfielder Sarpreet Singh were all recognised for their performances in the 1-0 victory against the fourth-placed City.

The A-League website labelled Kurto’s impenetrable display as a contender for best goalkeeping performance of the season.

The Polish import was in sublime form, making six second half saves to deny efforts from Riley McGree, Kearyn Baccus and Ramy Najjarine.

Phoenix captain Durante was described as posting a ‘‘flawless display’’ to help quell City’s second-half onslaught. He made three tackles, four clearances, three interceptions and won six duels.

Cacace capped off his best performance of the season by making a team-high six tackles and assisting on David Williams’ goal. The 18-year-old should have had a second assist to his name, setting up Williams for a near-identical chance midway through the first half, only for his team-mate to blaze the ball over the crossbar.

Singh brought some much needed energy to the Phoenix attack after starting from the bench in a 1-0 loss to Sydney FC earlier in the week.

The 19-year-old was everywhere. He made a team-high 89 touches and created one chance.
