Djokovic makes fan’s night
Picture this. A Novak Djokovic fan climbs a partition in an attempt to get close to the now seven-time Australian Open champion.
And against all odds it works, as he catches the attention of Djokovic but then realises he doesn’t have anything for the tennis superstar to sign.
The unprepared fan’s opportunity of a lifetime is seemingly going to be limited to a handshake but then comes a remarkable gesture from Djokovic – fresh from his straight-sets win over Rafael Nadal 6-3, 6-2 and 6-3 – to make the adoring fans night.
When the world No 1 realised the fan’s predicament, he signed his own jacket, took it off and handed it over to the supporter.
The Serbian was in a generous mood following his one-sided victory at Rod Laver Arena.
He had already given away his sweatbands, towels and shoes.
Djokovic was also generous with his time. Following his media commitments, he posed for selfies and signed autographs for many of his adoring fans.
He entered Margaret Court Arena – where a fan zone had been set up for those who did not secure tickets to the decider in Rod Laver Arena – and danced on a stage next to a DJ.
‘‘Going off the court, there’s not much time by yourself, so I think when I’m by myself tonight, that’s when it will start to kick in,’’ Djokovic said. DJOKOVIC P34,35
