Baboons euthanised at zoo

-

Wellington Zoo has euthanised four male baboons after their social structure broke down.

Habib, 14, Osiris, 7, Les, 17, and Rafiki, 15, were all born at Wellington Zoo. They were put down on Saturday.

They were the only examples at the zoo, which has housed baboons since 1967.

Chief executive Karen Fifield said social structure was critical for hamadryas baboons. The breakdown had led to serious fighting, which meant the baboons were being injured and suffering anxiety.

‘‘We have an important duty of care to ensure that all animals we care for at the zoo experience positive welfare and, unfortunately, for these baboons this is no longer the case,’’ Fifield said. ‘‘When it comes to a decision like this, we need to make a decision before the animals begin to suffer; in this case, it is a matter of urgency.’’

The situation had become ‘‘untenable’’ for the social primates, she added.

‘‘After extensive international research, lengthy discussions with our animal care, animal science and veterinary teams and other animal welfare experts, we are certain this is the kindest and most humane action.’’

Animal rights group SAFE said that euthanising the baboons highlighted the cruelty of keeping animals in captivity.

Chief executive Debra Ashton questioned Wellington Zoo’s ability to house its animals. ‘‘Clearly, the behavioural and habitat needs of the baboons were not being met.’’

Dr Ngaio Beausoleil, of the zoo’s animal welfare committee, said all other options, including re-homing, were considered before deciding to euthanise the group.
