Expo bans gun props

- Julie Iles

One of the largest cosplay events of the year will be free of realistic military costumes and firearms following the Christchurch attacks.

Organisers of Wellington’s April 13-15 Armageddon Expo have announced the change to their costume policy will apply to all future events.

‘‘Real-life and imitation military clothing of any kind will not be permitted under any circumstances,’’ organisers wrote in a Facebook post yesterday.

Those found in violation of the new rules would be ‘‘temporarily or permanently’’ removed from the event.

Captain America in his military attire, Call of Duty and Stargate soldiers were specifically mentioned as characters no longer permitted at the event.

Armageddon spokeswoman Courtney Collins said the decision to change the cosplay and props policy was made by the event management team over the weekend.

‘‘As a Christchurch-based business and being Christchurch residents ourselves, this felt like an appropriate response to ensure the peace of mind of the general public, as well as our event attendees.’’

One commenter wrote, ‘‘Speaking as someone who can now no longer wear the militarystyle costume I spent a great deal of time and money building; A costume of my all-time favourite character from my all-time favourite movie . . . I fully support this decision."

Others saw the policy change as ‘‘letting the terrorists win’’.

Collins said most had been supportive of the decision, but ‘‘a small few’’ disagreed.
