McGregor: I’m quitting

-

Conor McGregor says he is retiring from Mixed Martial Arts.

The UFC star announced his retirement on Twitter yesterday, five days after confirming a third battle against Nate Diaz.

McGregor was looking to revitalise his career with a third fight between himself and Diaz.

His tweet did not confirm when he would retire and if the fight with Diaz would take place.

‘‘Hey guys quick announcement, I’ve decided to retire from the sport formally known as ‘‘Mixed Martial Art’’ today.

‘‘I wish all my old colleagues well going forward in competition. I now join my former partners on this venture, already in retirement. Proper Pina Coladas on me fellas.’’

The 2016 bout between McGregor and Diaz drew 1.6m pay-per-view buys, which made it at the time the biggest UFC fight.

This was then eclipsed by McGregor’s most recent fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov, which drew 2.4m pay-per-view buys.

Since their rematch at UFC 202, McGregor has fought twice in the octagon, beating Eddie Alvarez, before losing his title to Nurmagomedov. He also fought once in the boxing ring against Floyd Mayweather in August 2017, losing by 10th-round TKO.

McGregor was recently arrested for allegedly stealing and smashing a fan’s mobile phone in south Florida. He was charged with robbery and criminal mischief.
