Top bed brands make resting an exercise in science

- Bedworld is open seven days a week at 242 Ferry Rd, Waltham. Call them on 03 377 8887 or visit bedworld.co.nz.

Choosing a bed can be a difficult process so it’s no surprise to find that people who have enjoyed their old bed often seek the same brand when updating. At Bedworld, that honour typically goes to Sealy.

Locally made and with a track record going back more than 130 years, Sealy has had plenty of opportunity to prove its merit, and according to Bedworld owner Mark Elliott, they’ve done so with remarkable success.

‘‘Sealy is a brand everyone knows and trusts, and for good reason,’’ he says. ‘‘When you think of really good support in a mattress, you often think ‘Posturepedic’.’’

Sealy’s iconic Posturepedic beds are among the best at balancing comfort and support in a way that suits most sleepers, Mark says.

The precise combination of springs, foam and fabric represents the culmination of decades of research into how best to support the body at rest.

The science behind the beds is complex, although Mark says it comes down to a couple of basic principles: the body needs to be correctly supported if muscles are to relax; and relieving pressure points will minimise the urge to toss and turn at night.

Sealy’s study of orthopaedically correct designs combines these elements in what it calls ‘‘Open Coil Technology’’, in which different types of spring are used for different areas of the body.

The approach is central to the Posturepedic system as it allows for a mattress that can ‘‘sense’’ changes in body weight and motion, and respond accordingly.

Sealy revolutionised the bedding industry in the 1970s when it developed the innerspring. Its latest releases are a continuation of that focus on intelligent support, Mark says.

This month, Bedworld has the Sealy range on sale. Finance is available from no deposit, with interest-free terms of up to 18 months.

Options at Bedworld extend far beyond Sealy, though, with the Ferry Rd showroom stocking a wide assortment of mattresses, bases and bedroom furniture

from New Zealand’s top local manufacturers. These include items from Sleepmaker, Beautyrest, Sleepsystems, Mazon Virtali and Natura Sleep.

There are high-quality electric adjustable beds – the ultimate in bedroom lifestyle furniture – natural latex mattresses for allergy sufferers, and a variety of bunks, trundler beds and foldout options for the spare room.

In most cases, the technology used by bedmakers has advanced greatly since Bedworld first opened its doors 20 years ago.

The developments make advice from the store’s trained staff increasingly valuable when narrowing down options. However, Mark says the best way to get started is usually to visit the showroom and just flop around on a few different models.

‘‘Our staff are very friendly and knowledgeable, and there’s no pressure on people who just want to browse,’’ he says.

‘‘We want to help people choose the bed that’s right for them because how well you sleep has a big impact on how you feel during the day. What we see is that opting for quality is a smart investment.’’
