Heat pumps can be a significant investment in any home or business. For that investment to pay off, it is important to maximise the effectiveness of the heat pump over its life.

Owners have a number of ways to do this, including the possibility of adding some exciting new technology to existing setups.

All options can be explored at Gavin Lowe Energy, which has been helping drive developments in New Zealand since opening the country’s first showroom with working split-system heat pumps nearly 25 years ago.

For people who have a ducted system, there is now the chance to upgrade by adding the AirTouch 4, which includes wi-fi and zone controls.

Sales manager Aaron Hawes says it’s a fantastic after-market option for busy homes.

‘‘It’s a really exciting upgrade because it gives you temperature and operational controls so can you turn it off or on or set the level you want in the various locations, whereas most existing ducted systems were put in as ‘all or nothing’ installations.

‘‘We even installed this on our own ducted system and it’s working brilliantly,’’ he says. ‘‘You can see it in action in the showroom – it’s very impressive.’’

The AirTouch 4 works by adding motorised dampers to ducting, putting wireless sensors in each area to be heated or cooled, and installing a wall-mounted master control tablet.

Aaron says the upgrade improves efficiency while also providing greater control through the use of wi-fi connectivity, so users can programme, monitor and change settings on the heat pump wherever they are.

Adding the AirTouch 4 usually costs about $3500.

Of course, wi-fi for home appliances is nothing new these days, and Gavin Lowe Energy also has wi-fi adaptors for standard split-system heat pumps from all major manufacturers.

Another upgrade is to add colour to an indoor or outdoor unit using the same painting process as employed by the automotive industry.

‘‘If your heat pump is starting to look a bit tired or faded but it’s still working perfectly well, we can help you get a brand new looking unit,’’ Aaron says. ‘‘It’s a very nice option if you want your heat pump to blend in or contrast with your decor.’’

Painting costs about $250 and a finished example is on show at Gavin Lowe Energy.

A faded louvre or cover could also be replaced using parts from the manufacturer, with Gavin Lowe Energy able to provide an assessment, source the parts and complete the installation.

Aaron says it’s surprising how often a noisy heat pump just needs a new part and it’s like new again.

Christchurch resident Angela McDonnell agrees. ‘‘When we moved into our home, the heat pump in it sounded like a tractor, and it also looked like it had seen better days. We were fully expecting to have to replace it,’’ she says.

‘‘After a representative from Gavin Lowe Energy came round, he recommended a new fan motor and a new louvre and panel. We went with this, and are so pleased we did.

‘‘The heat pump looks and operates like brand new, and we saved ourselves thousands of dollars. Great advice and obviously with our best interests at heart.’’
