Breakers continue horror start

- David Long

The New Zealand Breakers’ season hit another low last night, going down 117-100 to the 36ers in Adelaide.

The defeat means the Breakers have won just two of their 10 games this season and are the only team in the Australian NBL without an away win. It’s also their fifth straight loss.

This has become the Breakers’ worst start to a campaign since they joined the league for 2003-04 season and it’s tough to know how they can turn this around, especially considering their injury issues.

It has been another week where off-field issues have seen the Breakers dominate the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

This time it was because police were called to meet Thomas Vodanovich off the flight back from last weekend’s game against Perth. Then there was Glen Rice Jr’s court case, where he pleaded not guilty to an assault charge.

On the field, things haven’t been much better than they are off it, and they continue to look like a team that isn’t cohesive enough.

This was another disappointing loss and unless they can sort out their problems, they’re heading towards picking up the wooden spoon.

The Breakers held a 9-4 lead early in the game, but Adelaide then went on a scoring streak to go up 13-9.

At the end of the first quarter Adelaide held a narrow 29-28 lead, with Corey Webster scoring exactly half the Breakers’ points.

But then disaster struck for Webster when he rolled his ankle a few minutes into the second quarter.

He had to go to hospital and given Webster’s history of ankle problems, the Breakers might have to get used to being without him for a while.

Webster’s departure coincided with the Breakers falling to pieces as they struggled to stem the nonstop scoring from the 36ers.
