Fury’s triumph has Kiwi Parker fizzing

- Duncan Johnstone

New Zealand heavyweight Joseph Parker has joined Tyson Fury the day after the giant Brit climbed back to the top of division.

Parker and some of his team, including assistant trainer Taylor Barry, continued their strong friendship with Fury as they congratulated the new WBC champion for his remarkable win over Deontay Wilder.

Parker caught up with Fury at his Las Vegas hotel, donning the WBC and Ring Magazine belts with a smile and feeling he was with the ‘‘best of his era’’ as the boxing world absorbed the stunning sequel that played out at the MGM Grand casino on Sunday.

Fury scored a seventh round TKO victory in their rematch in Las Vegas on Sunday, handing American Wilder the first loss of his career while the giant Brit remains unbeaten.

‘‘I’m over the moon for him,’’ Parker told Stuff from Las Vegas. Parker was ringside at the MGM Grand for the fight and was buzzing for Fury, who proved as good as his word in destroying Wilder with an aggressive game plan.

Parker, who admires Fury’s scientific boxing skills, felt this was an allround performance with plenty of power involved.

‘‘I said he’s the best of our era,’’ Parker said.

‘‘He has lived up to his talk. He’s put in the hard work, changed his camp. A lot of people doubted it, but he proved that he is the best.’’

Parker leaves Vegas tomorrow for Texas where he has his own fight this weekend, taking on North American champion Shawndell Williams in Frisco on Sunday.

The Kiwi is fizzing for his overdue return to action. He said he found Fury inspirational.

‘‘When you see something like that, you want to be in the ring,’’ Parker said. ‘‘It’s given me a lot of excitement for my fight.’’
