Beauden’s back – for Coastal v Southern

- Phillip Rollo

A rural town in Taranaki will welcome back one of its favourite sons next month, with All Blacks star Beauden Barrett set to make his return to the sport via his former junior club.

Coastal Rugby and Sports Club has confirmed that Barrett will turn out for the Rahotu club when they play Taranaki senior rivals Southern on April 4.

It will be Barrett’s first competitive hit-out since last year’s World Cup, having worked a sabbatical into his four-year contract with the Blues.

‘‘We’re playing our nearest rivals Southern that day so it’s a game that attracts a lot of people anyway, but this will add a lot of interest. Beaudy is a favourite right throughout Taranaki – it’s not just rugby followers so I’m expecting a big crowd,’’ club chairwoman Janet Fleming said.

A two-time World Rugby Player of the Year, Barrett will team up with farmers, builders, mechanics and painters at a club he last played for 10 years ago.

‘‘As much as he’s a big superstar and the best player in the world, Beaudy is always very loyal to the club and he always

‘‘Beaudy is no stranger to the club. He’s regularly there throughout the season. He’s very approachable and we still see a and lot of Beaudy even international status.’’

While it is unclear how many games Barrett will play for Coastal, Blues fans will be hoping to have their star signing available for the April 11 clash against his former club, the Hurricanes.

‘‘Beaudy is welcome to play for Coastal whenever he gets a break, but obviously he’s got to look after himself and he’s contracted to the Blues,’’ Fleming said. ‘‘There will always be a spot for him but there’s no guarantees about how many games he’ll play this season or next.’’ with his
