Cynical line NZ will be the loser

-

Luke Malpass called National’s decision ‘‘to basically back the Government’s Covid strategy holus bolus’’ a ‘‘dreadful tacticalmistake’’ (Sept 12). He seems to be claiming that regardless of how well the strategy was put together or how successfully it protected New Zealanders, National should have attacked it purely for political advantage.

This is a despicably cynical line to take and makes no sense. National’s later attempts to mount snide attacks – for example suggesting that Jacinda Ardern visiting amask factory and Ashley Bloomfield getting tested were part of some secret government conspiracy – have not done that party any good at all.

While there have inevitably been mistakes, some of them serious, overall this strategy has delivered the second-best Covid-19 statistics in the world.

As if the Green Party has not already stacked New Zealand businesses with costs, now it comes up with yet another one (Editorial, Sept 16). Businesses will have to make a yearly report on their climate impact. More paperwork, more compliance costs.

Australiawill be the winner, especially if the Greens get their wealth tax. The added expense to thosewishing to use their capital to invest inNew Zealand, and the extra costs of doing business, will be enough to cause the relocation of those with capital, or their businesses, to Australia. New Zealandwill be the loser, for the job creators will go.
