M¯aori’s right

-

Glenn McConnell encourages us not to be scared of a little selfdetermination (May 6).

I agree the rights of minorities should not take a back seat when determining the needs of that group or the solution to problems facing them.

Our local councils used to operate on the principle of subsidiarity, which ensures decision-making happens at the most appropriate level so all those affected can contribute.

This principle should guide any current discussion about local council reform. It appears the guiding principle by those who get worked up and whip up fear about ‘‘separatism’’ is not the welfare of the minority groups but the dollars that comes with achieving the best for all New Zealanders.

Ma¯ ori have a lot to teach us. I am not afraid to learn from their example and authority. Ensuring that Ma¯ ori have equal rights to determine the way forward for themselves will be of value to all the nation.

It is ironic that National and ACT want self-determination for the wealthy evidenced in their letthe-free-market reign policies, but cry ‘‘separatism’’ when moves are made to ensure Ma¯ ori have what is their right; self-determination.

We have a new motto, ‘‘we are a team of five million’’, but team members don’t bring the same skills or talent to the team. Each player brings to the game what he or she has to offer; this is what makes them a winning team. Let’s be a ‘‘nation’’ of winners.
