Five things to do in the city on Labour Day

Zealandia

Waiapu Rd, Karori, 9am-5pm, $10-$50 (family pass)

Explore this wildlife sanctuary at your own pace or be led by a guide. During the day, walk among rare birds like hihi, kākāriki and takahē. Spot prehistori­c reptiles like the tuatara bathing in the sun. Level 2 restrictio­ns apply. Tickets and info: visitzeala­ndia.com.

Halloween at the Wellington Cable Car

Lambton Quay Terminal, every day until Sunday, 7.30pm-8pm, $2.50-$5

Enjoy a spooky ride on the cable car as the terminal and cable cars have been decked out in Halloween decoration­s. There may even be a few things to spot on the way up to Kelburn terminal, so keep your eyes peeled, if you dare to ride.

Bolton Street Cemetery

Open daily from dawn to dusk

To really appreciate Labour Weekend, visit Samuel Parnell’s grave in the Bolton Street Cemetery. Parnell is known as the father of the eighthour day in New Zealand. While you are there, visit the memorial to Harry Holland (1868-1933) – one of the founders of the Labour Party.
