The Post shines with multiple media award nominations

- Tracy Watkins julie.jacobson@stuff.co.nz

It’s been a big day for New Zealand media and a big day for us here at The Post as well.

The Post has been named a finalist as digital news provider of the year, best newspaper and also best coverage of a breaking news event in the prestigious Voyager Media Awards.

There could be no better way to celebrate as we approach our first anniversary as a new website, under a new name, and with an ambitious plan to grow our readership.

These awards mean so much to us because they are a testament to the journalism that we produce every day.

That’s reflected in the number of our journalists who have been named finalists in individual awards. Nikki Macdonald, whose thoughtful and in depth reporting is long form journalism at its best is a finalist for reporter of the year; senior journalist Mike $hite and national affairs editor Andrea Vance are both competing for the title of scoop of the year – what sets both of them apart from the competition is their dogged pursuit of stories and their unrivalled access to sources established over years of trusted journalism.

$hite is also a finalist for Sports Journalist of the Year – recognition of his truly outstanding and inspirational stories of human endeavour in that field.

I’m particularly proud of Hanna McCallum’s nomination for junior feature writer of the year because it’s a mark of the calibre of the next generation of journalists being nurtured in our newsroom.

But the best journalism is often a team effort and our nomination for best coverage of a breaking news event, for the tragic Loafers Lodge fire, reflects that. It’s the sort of top-flight reporting you can expect to see in the next stage of our evolution, as Stuff and its masthead newsrooms, including The

take on the challenge of producing the 6pm news.

It’s a great way to top off a huge year for journalism. But what stood out for me has been how many of you – our readers

– have shown the value you place on quality and authoritative journalism by subscribing to our website and newspaper. My own nomination for editorial leader of the year is a reflection of that.

So thank you. Your support is the biggest accolade of all.
