The Post’s business team has got you covered

- Luke Malpass Politics, business and economics editor

After years of New Zealand’s living standards being supported by low interest rates, house price growth and big commodity exports, the world is now changing. People are doing it tough – and the current recession is hitting the middle classes who paid big for houses and are now being smashed by the higher costs of mortgages, and thanks to inflation, everything else.

There’s a new Government committed to pro-business reforms – some better conceived than others – in the middle of a wave of activity. The budget is in the red, inflation is still too high and both key commodity prices and corporate profits are down. Productivity growth has flat-lined.

At The Post we want to chronicle and make sense of this overarching story, and report on all the small stories within it along the way.

With a background in financial and economic reporting and previously an editor at The Australian Financial Review, I am returning to familiar territory – the economy and politics. My expanded role will seek to tie our business, politics and economics coverage together. How the three intersect daily is important in Wellington but has a much larger national impact.

Together with our terrific team of senior business reporters we will be reporting on the business stories that matter, keeping you up to date, doing the big interviews with the nation’s chief executives and board chairs, up-and-comers as well as delivering incisive analysis.

From today – besides our C-Suite Suite Power List – you will notice The Post has introduced some new features in our business coverage. The first is increased prominence and space given to our business stories on our website www.thepost.co.nz and in the newspaper.

We have introduced a new “global politics and economics” section, which you will find when you scroll down the website on laptop or phone.

This frequently updated section brings subscribers the best deeper reads, news and analysis from our international partners – The Times of London, The Telegraph, Bloomberg, The Washington Post and the Sydney Morning Herald. To keep you up to date on what has happened in the business world and what’s to come, look out for After Five, a new daily column published after 5pm Monday to Friday – a quick take on the important bits from business and markets each day along with what to look out for tomorrow. It will be a must read for anyone who needs to quickly keep tabs on New Zealand’s corporate scene.

And tomorrow we will be bringing you a bit of business luxe – a weekly column focusing on the nice-to-haves for everyone in business.

Remember, as a subscriber, The Post is your go-to website. We break and update stories throughout the day. Bookmark it and make it part of your daily habit.
