Nicola Rich and Damian Scoon received the best Christmas present they could hope for yesterday – the delivery of a healthy baby boy.

Connor Liam Scoon is believed to be the first baby born in Canterbury this Christmas Day, arriving at 12.04am at Christchurch Women’s Hospital. Rich, who was due to give birth on January 3, joked with medical staff to turn the clock back so Connor would be born on Christmas Eve.

She arrived at the hospital at 10.30pm, and Connor was born just over 90 minutes later.

‘‘When I heard four minutes and 12, I thought it was four minutes to 12,’’ she said.

‘‘We were joking, can we just turn the clock back?’’

Although he weighed just 3.8 kilograms, Connor already had a healthy crop of red hair, possibly from his father’s Scottish heritage or Rich’s Irish roots.

The couple want to ensure Connor has a birthday and Christmas each year, instead of having the two events rolled into one.

The family will return to their Rolleston home today, where Connor will meet brother Jack, 2.
