Brockie delivers goods in front of father

- Tony Smith

All White Jeremy Brockie scored his first Major League Soccer goal in front of his father as coach Ryan Nelsen’s Toronto FC team chalked up a 3-3 draw with a Canadian rival yesterday.

Brockie – on loan to Toronto from the Wellington Phoenix – said before the match against the Montreal Impact in Toronto that it was ‘‘a perfect opportunity for me to break my duck and get off the mark’’.

‘‘If I can knock one in while [Dad’s] there, it will make it a lot more sweeter.’’

Nelson businessman Paul Brockie was among the crowd of 21,700 to see his son score in the sixth minute of the eastern conference derby.

Brockie received the ball inside the Montreal area, knocked it past a defender and lashed in a leftfooted shot on the turn.

The 25-year-old former Canterbury United and Nelson Suburbs forward was also credited with an assist when he delivered a perfect cross for former Scottish international Steven Caldwell to head home Toronto’s second goal in the 21st minute.

Brockie ranked second on the MSL Soccer.com man-of-the-match ratings.

It said the South Islander ‘‘scored a beauty of a debut goal and set up Caldwell’s header in a breakout performance, making Ryan Nelsen glad he took a chance on his fellow Kiwi’’.

Brockie, who is due to rejoin the Phoenix next month for pre-season training, tweeted later that it was a ‘‘good feeling scoring my first MLS goal . . . but absolutely gutted we didn’t take all three points!’’
