The current huge media interest in bribery and corruption associated with FIFA should remind us of an overt example of this in our own country. For around $4m (in the form of a Conference Centre), the Government changed the laws to enable a private company involved in the gambling industry to increase its profits. Thus if you have a personal interest in something which could become more profitable if the law was changed, it is just a matter of haggling over the price.

Since when is stealing from the red zone okay? Would the person who stole from the red zone garden on New Brighton Rd please return what you have taken. The work on this site is done by volunteers at great expense to themselves to beautify part of our city for others to enjoy. I don't think the commandment ‘‘Thou shall not steal’’ has been revoked.

In the photograph on the front page of the world section (May 28) of the Shiite militia is giving a peace sign during the fight against the Islamic State. The irony is deep and wide given that Islam is often described as a religion of peace.

An American entrepreneur, James Rouse was shopping with his wife and children in 1957. The weather turned foul and he realised how difficult a shopping trip could be. He decided a ‘‘covered street’’ would protect families from the cold or heat. His malls became community centres with fountains, post offices, even a church. He went on to build a city – Columbia, Maryland. The point is that ‘‘the mall’’ was built from a caring point of view. Futher reading in Wye Island by David Bruce Smith.

I walked away from the new bus exchange this week feeling excited with my surroundings and the energy going into the city's rebuild. There were cranes on the skyline, and a sense of purpose seen in the strides of people. Contrast this with how I felt walking into the Square. Desolation, a complete absence of people and a ruined monolith dominating the area. I don't understand why the council and the church leaders have left this space in such a state.

How is it we see so many letters from people who break the law speeding who say a ticket is only revenue-gathering? Our death toll signals that speed is often a factor. If we break other laws, like taking something in the supermarket without paying, do these same people say it’s not breaking the law?
