jive with Scott Coles, bro of ballroom sensation Brendon Cole, had shades of an infamous spear tackle.

Radio and television presenter Simon Barnett turned in a cheesy cha cha tutored by Vanessa Cole, sistah of Brendon, with his mouth wide open like a sideshow clown, showed he was no thong and dance man as the born-again Christian channelled Ecclesiastes 3.4 that there is a time to weep, a time to laugh . . . but unfortunately for him, no time to dance.

The show finally took off when actor Ben Barrington ( The Almighty Johnsons) showed that Olaf was no oaf as he expertly foxtrotted sex pot Krystal Stuart round the dance floor like a Gene Kelly in the making.

But it was radio host Jay-Jay Harvey who in the words of judge, Hayley Holt ‘‘blew us . . . away’’ in her nimble jive that judge Candy Lane applauded saying: ‘‘You sold that sucker all the way home.’’

The less said about boxer Shane Cameron’s effort the better but it was full of low blows, with the majority decision from the judges labelling the shopworn boxer a ‘‘meat-handed mountain warrior’’.

International model Colin Mathura-Jeffree was the judges’ and producer Julie Christie’s favourite as we saw him with his pony-tailed partner Kristie Williams meeting and greeting John Key at a celebrity event, which was the biggest mis-step of the show since Krystal got dropped by Rodney ‘‘Rawhide’’ Hide.

Candy Lane loved his lifts remarking: ‘‘That’s the first time I’ve ever seen you pick up a woman’’.

Pam Corkery, shimmering in gold, gallumped her way round the dance floor and in rehearsal with her partner Matt Tatton Brown told him off saying: ‘‘Throwing money at me won’t work’’ as the electorate shouted from the couch: ‘‘Dotcom’s did!’’

Actress Siobhan Marshall turned in a creditable performance, which didn’t seem to warrant the judges’ over-the-top score, and the competition ended with The Bachelor’s bi-ach Chrystal Chenery stealing the show with her partner Jonny Williams as she set the tone of her style to come in her opening line.

‘‘Hi I’m Chrystal and I’m thirty (I mean flirty)’’.
