Twins’ peak proposal for partners

- Michael Wright

Josh and Sam Doherty dropped to one knee almost in unison and reached for the rings.

Smooth move. A public double marriage proposal seems like it can go two ways: Disney animal movie cute or hand-me-a-bucket cringe. Identical twins are probably among the few who could pull it off. And they did. On Wednesday, at just the right spot at the Remarkables Ski Area overlooking Queenstown, the brothers popped their questions.

Kate Crewes (Josh’s girlfriend) and Amy Law (Sam’s girlfriend) said yes.

‘‘Me and Sam, we knew about this for a while,’’ Josh said.

‘‘About 18 months ago I rang [Sam] up and I said to him ‘what’s going on? When are you going to drop the knee for Amy?’ He said, ‘I’m thinking about doing it when you come over here for skiing.’ I said ‘no way, that’s when I was going to propose to Kate.’ I said ‘let’s do it together.’’’

The plan was hatched, but making it happen took some work. Sam stashed a bottle of Champagne in his ski jacket to deliver to a bar halfway up the mountain. Then the brothers had to ditch the girls to finalise plans with a photographer.

‘‘As soon as we arrived I said to the girls, ‘me and Sam are going to go off and do a run by ourselves’,’’ Josh said.

‘‘The way they looked at each other was like ‘that’s pretty selfish’.

‘‘We just jumped chairlift.’’

Everything was set. Josh and Sam only had to manoeuvre everyone into position.

‘‘We were actually in the line to get a hot dog and a few drinks and [Josh] took me out of the line,’’ Kate said.

‘‘It was a huge line and I just got so p..... off.’’

The moment of truth. The brothers got down on bended knee.

‘‘Amy thought that Josh was getting on his knee and it was only Josh, and then Sam was like ‘look at me’,’’ Kate said.

‘‘She did a double take and kept doing a twist with her head.

‘‘Then [it] just happened and I was speechless. I didn’t say much for the whole day, I don’t think. I was in my own little world. Amy

the was very vocal. It was completely different reactions.

‘‘It was amazing. I don’t think we could have asked for anything better than that. Probably the best day of our lives.’’

Rounding off the matches made in heaven is the fact that Kate, from England and Amy, from Scotland, are best friends. They met Josh and Sam, also from England, when they all lived in Australia. Sam and Amy now live in Christchurch. Josh and Kate were over from Sydney to mark the twins’ 28th birthday on Tuesday.

The double act may get an encore. Plans are afoot for a joint wedding.

‘‘It’s the ladies’ special day,’’ Josh said.

‘‘Let’s just sit on it and see how it works out.’’
