Wood, Reid face tough cup ties

-

All Whites captain Winston Reid faces a visit to Manchester United and countryman Chris Wood will be playing against Liverpool in the English League Cup quarterfinals.

Reid’s West Ham will travel to Old Trafford after beating Chelsea 2-1 in the fourth round yesterday.

Wood scored in regular time and in the penalty shootout as his Leeds United side knocked out Norwich City, 3-2, on penalties after a 2-2 stalemate at the end of extra-time.

Liverpool-Leeds used to be a plum tie from the 1960s through to 2000, but the two northern clubs have not met since 2009 with Leeds now playing in the Championship second tier. West Ham and Manchester United last clashed in the League Cup at the quarterfinal stage in 2010.

The other quarterfinal matchups see Arsenal at home to Southampton (1-0 winners over Sunderland) while relegated Newcastle United will be keen to show they are still premier league class when they visit Hull City.

Manchester United qualified for the last eight as Jose Mourinho got his own back on great managerial rival Pep Guardiola.

United beat a weakened Manchester City 1-0 with Juan Mata scoring a second-half winner.

Six weeks after City’s 2-1 win at Old Trafford in the Premier League, United got a measure of revenge as Mourinho’s decision to play a virtually full-strength team paid off.

Mata fired home from 10 metres in the 54th minute, ensuring City are now winless in six games under Guardiola ..

West Ham are looking more at home on their new base - London’s Olympic Stadium - after this second win there in four days. Cheikhou Kouyate and Edimilson Fernandes scored for the Hammers.
