Transgender protest
Protesters advocating for better care of a transgender woman are picketing outside Dunedin’s Department of Corrections office. Scout Barbour-Evans, of No Pride in Prisons, said the group was protesting the treatment of a transgender woman held in 23-hour lockdown. The transgender woman was recently moved to an isolation unit at Spring Hill Corrections and told she had been moved for her own safety. ‘‘Since being in solitary confinement she is telling our advocate how suicidal she is faring.’’ Barbour-Evans said the protest was held alongside others in Auckland and Wellington.
