Rooney equals Charlton’s record

-

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney equalled Bobby Charlton’s club record of 249 goals as the FA Cup holders reached the fourth round with an emphatic 4-0 home win over Championship side Reading yesterday.

As Charlton watched on from the stands, Rooney gave United a seventh-minute lead with an opportunist strike and missed chances to set a record after Anthony Martial had added the second.

Marcus Rashford, who wasted several opportunities after being given a rare start up front, sealed United’s eighth successive victory with two quickfire goals in the closing stages.

Five English Premier League clubs crashed out of the FA Cup after losing third round matches.

Bournemouth paid the price for making 11 changes - an entire team - by losing 3-0 to League One (third tier) club Millwall.

Goals by Darren Bent and Tom Ince gave Derby County, from England’s second tier Championship league, a 2-1 win over Tony Pulis’ West Bromwich Albion.

Everton were eliminated in a 2-1 loss to EPL champions Leicester City after a double by Nigerian striker Ahmed Musa.

Mark Hughes watched his Stoke City team go down 2-0 to Championship club Wolverhampton Wanderers, who marked a deserved win with a superb goal to Wander He´lder Costa.

Swansea City’s wretched season continued after fellow EPL strugglers Hull City welcomed new Portugese manager Marco Silva with a 2-0 win.

French striker Olivier Giroud’s golden goal scoring run continued with a late winner in Arsenal’s 2-1 victory at Championship battlers Preston North End.

Preston - inspired by Everton loanee and Republic of Ireland international Aiden McGeady grabbed an early lead through Calum Robinson’s seventh minute goal, an advantage they maintained at halftime.

But Arsenal’s Welsh midfielder Aaron Ramsey equalised immediately after the restart and Giroud, who had earlier had a goal disallowed for offside, scored from close range after 89 minutes.
