Five things from battering the Bulls

-

OPINION: Ten from ten. The Crusaders kept their winning streak alive in Pretoria on Sunday morning. What were the features of that 62-24 win over the Bulls?

1 That if you recorded that game, it’s worth watching again and again. Get footage off YouTube, or bake some shortbread as a gift for your neighbour so they let you access their cable TV. Do anything to see it. Ten tries against the Bulls at Loftus! It may never happen again in our lifetime.

2 Jack Goodhue has arrived, well and truly. Good enough to keep Seta Tamanivalu on the wing, strong enough to survive and thrive in Super Rugby. Centre Goodhue is still only 21, but has oodles of confidence. His two tries signalled to the South Africans how a midfielder can vary, and influence, a game.

3 What is Crusaders scrum coach Jason Ryan feeding that unforgiving beast, which he unleashes each weekend? The Bulls pack was humiliated in the set piece, giving the impression it was trying to do a clumsy moonwalk. Some of the old heads from the halcyon days of the Blue Bulls must have mopping tears off their leathery cheeks.

4 Fear not, the removal of All Blacks Sam Whitelock and Kieran Read did no harm. In fact, the team seem galvanised by their absence, as if wanting to prove a point. Their first win in Pretoria since 2008 was full of purpose and poise.

5 That the Crusaders should feel thankful that they have signed David Havili through to 2019. You can only hope he negotiated himself a decent deal when he re-signed with the club last year, because if the fullback was on the open market his value would be soaring.
