Gloves off over cathedral
Now the gloves are coming off in the Cathedral-future contest. The Greater Christchurch Building Trust (GBCT) co-chairman tells us (May 12) any decision to demolish would lead to ‘‘years and years of ongoing litigation’’ in which the GCBT ’’would use the full force of the legal entitlement to see that this never happened’’. Yet Mike Yardley and others persist in charging the Anglican Church Property Trustees (CPT) with responsibility for inaction over the derelict eyesore we have at the moment.
This same news item records unequivocally that the CPT wants to move forward as quickly as possible, without further delay, once a decision as to the future nature of the cathedral in the Square is made. It seeks a building that will serve both church and city well, inspirational in design, reflecting who we are and where we live while recalling our pioneer roots as a Canterbury settlement.
