Work to start on luxury Nelson apartments

- HANNAH BARTLETT

Nelson’s inner-city Betts Corner apartments have been given the green light, with construction planned for August.

The site, which had been used as a car park, is one of 17 special housing areas (SHAs) approved by the Nelson City Council and Housing Minister Nick Smith.

Betts Corner syndicate spokesperson Craig Dennis said while the apartments had been on the market since December, they’ve now been given resource consent.

‘‘We’re really excited about it. It’s the first of the [SHAs] to come through for Nelson,’’ Dennis said.

Consent has been given for 17 apartments at the Betts Corner development, on the corner of Trafalgar Square and Nile St, and 11 of them have already been sold.

‘‘There’s been overwhelming demand for penthouses, which have all sold,’’ Dennis said.

The one-, two- and threebedroom apartments range in price from $760,000 to $1.8 million, and were designed by Arthouse Architects.

Nelson mayor Rachel Reese said the development would be good for Nelson. ‘‘As the first of the special housing projects, it’s gratifying to see the success of the concept. Together with other housing developments under way, it will help bring new life and energy to the city.’’

In March this year, the Nelson City Council approved a further four SHAs to bring the city’s total number to 17.

The Nelson Housing Accord, a central government scheme that allows these fast-tracked residential developments to get the council’s sign-off, was also extended to 2021.

The accord prioritises urban developments, such as Betts Corner, but rural developments have also been included in Nelson.
