Out of control car strikes young sisters

- RUWADE BRYANT

Eden Wilson remembers the car skidding towards her and her sister — then it all went black.

Eden, 10, and Zurile Wilson, 8, were struck by a car while walking to school in Waiuku, rural South Auckland on Tuesday.

The driver, who is facing driving charges, had lost control of the vehicle and mounted the curb on Hamilton Drive.

Eden remembers the accident well and said it was ‘‘scary’’.

‘‘We saw the car skidding on the road, and then we moved back into the yard,’’ said Eden.

‘‘I remember it coming towards us and then it went all black.’’

The girls’ father, Kaleb Wilson, said his heart sank when he heard the news.

Kaleb, a maths and chemistry student, had just arrived at Auckland University, when he received the call from his wife Lisapeta.

‘‘The feeling [when I got the phone call] was like ... almost similar to the feeling you get when you are on a rollercoaster — your guts just drop out from under you,’’ Kaleb said.

The sisters were rushed to Middlemore Hospital by the ambulance service.

Kaleb and Lisapeta, who also have a one-year-old boy Jonathan, were reunited with their daughters there.

‘‘It was actually a bit of a relief when I saw them, just to see that they weren’t too badly injured,’’ Kaleb said. ‘‘They were awake and talking.’’ Eden is now back at home but she still has a ‘‘slight limp’’, which means she will be off school for the rest of the week and might have to take time off from netball.

Kaleb and Lisapeta hoped to have Zurile back at home from hospital on Wednesday.

Kaleb said the girls were ‘‘pretty much inseparable’’.

He described Eden as being ‘‘very extroverted, talkative and social‘‘ while Zurile ‘‘is a bit of a bookworm’’.
