Oyster contracts

The Government is awarding oyster removal contracts to oyster farmers to support them as they lose their livelihoods. Last month, the Ministry for Primary Industries ordered the removal of all farmed oysters from certain bays around Stewart Island after a breakout of potentially lethal parasite Bonamia ostreae. A ministry spokeswoman said it was using employees from affected oyster businesses where possible ‘‘to guarantee some work’’.
