Two for one in CBD

The Netherlands appears to have found the solution to funding iconic churches like our cathedral.

I attended large international conferences in Amsterdam and Utrecht in the last fortnight. Both conferences had their openings, major plenary and other sessions, and one had its conference dinner, in ancient churches. Perhaps this is the solution for the Christchurch Cathedral and the slow to rise Christchurch Convention Centre.

They could be combined and reclassified as the Christchurch Cathedral Convention Centre and our problems with both facilities would be solved. This would require some rethinking of designs, but we have plenty of time. After a tornado destroyed the nave of the Cathedral in Utrecht, it lay in ruins for 150 years while the locals decided what to do with it. Hamish Rennie Lincoln University
