The Riccarton Players community theatre group is looking for a new home after selling its former base.

The Christchurch group sold the Mill Theatre to structural engineer Michael King, who plans to develop the entire Wood Brothers Mill complex.

The theatre had been the group’s home since 1983, but the building has been out of action since the February 2011 earthquake.

The group originally planned to restore and strengthen the building in partnership with a developer, but Riccarton Players life member Graeme Randle said the group decided to sell the theatre because it did not have the money needed to restore it. King plans to turn the theatre into a multi-purpose venue that would house between 250 and 350 people and is expected to be finished by August next year.

Randle said the redeveloped theatre would not be suitable for the group’s base.

The group had registered interest in a few Christchurch City Council-owned buildings, but was waiting for the council to decide on the future of the buildings, Randle said.
