Rugby Southland boss resigns

- RUGBY

Rugby Southland general manager Andrew Moreton has resigned and will leave the organisation at the end of February.

Moreton took up the job in the middle of 2015. The search for his replacement is already under way, chairman Jason Franklin said.

‘‘Moreton joined the business at a challenging time and has managed to make significant changes,’’ Franklin said.

‘‘Andrew has put in place improved systems and has got Rugby Southland to a position where it is very well positioned for the future.’’

Southland last month announced former All Blacks and Canterbury prop Dave Hewett would take over coaching the struggling Mitre 10 Cup team.

‘‘With a new year upon us and a new Stags head coach now in place, I feel it is the right time for me to move on to other opportunities and allow someone else to lead the organisation. It has been a privilege to work for Rugby Southland,’’ Moreton said.

‘‘I cannot understate the dedication of my staff to deliver rugby across the province and the hundreds of volunteers that help keep the game strong in Southland.’’

‘‘It has been particularly exciting to see the growth of the female game, and the further increase in our coaching numbers, as well as the young local talent coming up through the grades to play at representative level.’’
