Boat shed burglary mystery

- PRESS REPORTER

A burglar who raided a Canterbury boat shed took the unusual step of putting their own property in its place.

Akaroa police are asking for the public’s help solving the ‘‘mystery’’ of the thief – or thieves – breaking into boat sheds at Jones Bay.

The boat shed burglars took belongings from two sheds at French Farm between March and December last year, a post on Akaroa police’s Facebook page said.

"They've also done a few alterations to the sheds."

Police said the thieves had some DIY skills and used a kayak or boat.

‘‘They’ve also done a few alterations to the sheds,’’ the post said.

‘‘Akaroa police would like to let the burglars know that we’re holding on to your property – and to please give us a call to discuss.’’

The shed’s owners put a sign on the door asking people to contact police with information about the items taken.

Police said they thought the burglars may live outside Akaroa. They believe they own a dog, possibly named Bear, because a wine bottle left at the sheds was labelled ‘‘Bear – 2 months’’.

Another wine bottle was labelled ‘‘Celebrating at the boat shed 6/3/17’’.

Anyone with information could contact Akaroa police on 03 304 1030,
